welcome to Akron Elementary School we believe that all students can be successful academically socially and emotionally and we are committed to Success Through the development of character leadership and literacy Akron Elementary kindergarten program is full of fun academic social and emotional activities we offered three section a full day kindergarten our kindergarten students enjoy breakfast lunch and a snack throughout the day we have a variety of activities the students get to participate and like Jim art library computer lab and our Project Lead the Way stem program we believe our students need to be active during the school day so our kindergarten students have to recess and also move around during Choice time and brain breaks your Akron Elementary grades K through 5 Implement reader's Workshop during this time students gather with teacher for short mini lesson and then they are dismissed to go read and apply what they have learned when students go off to read the book that they have chosen that are on their reading this allows them to read independently during this time teachers move around the room to meet with students individually or in small to check in to see if the skills are being applied or offering support where needed after this independent reading time students meet back with the teacher to share their learning with one another being of the year we introduce letters and sounds we also began introducing simple sight words as the year progresses students are given more words that we practiced with in the classroom and during swoop many times we practice our letters and words through games and songs we believe that students enjoy reading more when they have a choice in what they read we hope to foster a love for reading not only in kindergarten but throughout their whole life I don't litter the program starts in kindergarten with her sweet program is a reading program we start at the beginning of the school year with all of our kindergarten through second-grade students all students are placed in small reading groups based on their reading levels has received 30 minutes of intense reading instruction based on their needs are leveled Library houses hundreds of books for our teachers to use during the instruction the levels Library give teachers resources that are available in their classroom we use the workshop model for Math and kindergarten will introduce a topic as a whole group and students will work independently to build knowledge of math concepts and our lesson for the day was summarized as a group to check for the students understanding the concept for the day and build on those Concepts all year long after he introduced the students practice on their own to build skills in that lesson area students independent practice time may include station game Mac Nicky would have practices dance songs and other Hands-On activities the major math milestones for our kindergarten year include counting to 100 writing numbers to 20 adding and subtracting within 10 and learning about shapes both two-dimensional and three-dimensional are accrington regarding team philosophy is that kids learn best when they are engaged up and moving within the classroom and just having fun during Choice time is a time where children can play and they can choose what kind of materials they want to play with other years ago that we can get play back into the curriculum so a few colleagues and I I started to do some research on why play is so important and as we were researching we were finding things from other teachers that are already implemented men in their class time the children toy song where they go based on the things that we have set out at the beginning of the year so we have now we have blocks connect two straws there's dramatic play magnetic tiles and puppets and children are called the other people had their first choice and then they can decide where they want to go from there and then once they have chosen where they want to go they have to make a plan before they can play and they have to talk to one another on what they want to do and thank you have to share those material and then I can make it and they can do it together you can do that's what they play together and then we're just responsible and we clean up you know that's really important for us just to get that the children so that also that their environment just feels inviting for them and then they can take risk because you know it's play and it's just natural for student it's just the way that they learn the why not bring it here in to school Mentor is a great place where we are doing whatever it takes to equip all students to be out Sandy today tomorrow and Beyond
